Hartlepool Literacy Taskforce – Join us at our next October meeting
Hartlepool College are delighted to be hosting a further Literacy Taskforce Business Partnership meeting in October. Following our successful launch event in July, it’s clear that Hartlepool’s business community is ready to tackle literacy challenges together. As we begin the new academic year, we’re excited to build on that momentum and get our dedicated business sub-group fully operational.
Why This Matters for Hartlepool
With £140 million being invested in Hartlepool’s regeneration, we have an unprecedented opportunity to transform our town. However, more than a third of adults in Hartlepool have very low levels of literacy, which can limit their ability to benefit from new job opportunities and career progression that regeneration will bring.
What We’re Doing
The Hartlepool Literacy Taskforce brings together local businesses, Hartlepool Borough Council, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, and Kier Group to address literacy challenges through three key areas:
- Public Confidence Building – tracking and improving self-reported literacy confidence across Hartlepool
- Educational Outcomes – improving literacy performance from Key Stage 1 through to post-16 achievements
- Business Engagement – building a network of local employers committed to supporting literacy development
Led by Hartlepool College Principal Darren Hankey, the business sub-group focuses on engaging local organisations to support staff development, improve workplace communications, and contribute to community literacy programmes.
Get Involved
There a wide range of practical ways you can make a difference while strengthening your own workforce. Please join us for our next meeting on 13 October 2025 at 10am at Hartlepool College of Further Education to learn more.
