Advanced manufacturing is a key sector in the Tees Valley, and Hartlepool has a greater concentration of advanced manufacturing employment than across the Tees Valley or England. Over half of Tees Valley jobs in electrical manufacturing and engineering are in Hartlepool, with companies such as Merlin Flex and Stadium Group.
Process, chemicals and energy
Process, chemicals and energy is a particular strength in the Borough – driven by Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station and Able Seaton Port with offshore wind farm capabilities, specialist processing and circular economy activities such as waste management with assets such as Able Seaton Port at the heart of this as the leading UK location for offshore oil and gas decommissioning.
Health and Biologics
Health and Biologics, the health care industry provides a significant number of jobs in Hartlepool (c. 2,500 in 2017), following established national trends and will remain a substantive part of the economy.

Pharmaceuticals is a small but important sector in the Borough, with 80% of Tees Valley jobs in this sector based in Hartlepool.
Creative Industries
Creative industries is a key sector for growth in Hartlepool. The world class Northern School of Art is a key part of this industry’s ecology and recent developments like the BIS provides opportunities to retain and support this talent locally. The Digital Sector is a fast growing core industry in the Tees Valley benefiting from specialisms of Teesside University. Digital businesses currently generate 400 jobs in the Town and are set to grow.
Tourism
Tourism is an important sector for the Borough with a significant coastline and key historic, cultural and environmental assets at the Headland, Marina, Seaton Carew and the Teesmouth. Visitor Economy Expenditure in 2018 was over £190m.
