Heritage Lottery Fund continues Church Street revival

What is the project?

Hartlepool Borough Council has received £1.1million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver a three year project to breathe new life into Church Street Conservation Area. The project will comprise three elements;

1) Public realm works to Church Square

The project is contributing towards the works to Church Square. The redevelopment of the square will create a new public open space, landscaping and green space, seating areas and pedestrian friendly surfacing to enhance the setting of the art gallery. Works have now started on site and are due to be completed by Autumn 2018.

2) Building Grants to conserve and repair properties in Church Street

There are two types of grants available, these are:

Building Grants - to support businesses or property owners looking to make their properties structurally sound, watertight, and repair and restore traditional details. Grants will be offered at 75% of the cost of the works including any professional advice that may be required; the maximum grant will be capped at £20,000.

Shop Front Grants - specifically for the repair and reinstatement of traditional shop fronts. The maximum grant for a shop front is 90% of the value of the works, these will be capped at £10,000.

The priority area for the grants is the eastern end of Church Street between Whitby Street and Mainsforth Terrace. Subject to demand, grants will be targeted at properties in this area first and will be dealt with on a first come first served basis.
